Life as president
Abraham Lincoln ran for president in 1860. He won the election against Stephen A. Douglas. Their presidential debates made Lincoln famous.
When he became president, his intention was to save the union, and then deal with slavery. But he needed to save the union and deal with slavery at the same time. But he ended up dealing with slavery AND saving the union at the same time. Lincoln also got to the point that slavery should not only be stopped, but that African Americans should have equal rights
Lincoln understood the entire strategy of war, how to use the navy, and how to try and reason without violence. Lincoln fought, and fought, to have the law that abolished slavery passed.
When he finally did, there was happiness all around the North. African Americans were overjoyed that there would be no more whipping, abusing, yelling, and being considered property.
Five days before General Robert E. Lee (general of the Confederate army) would surrender to Ulysses S. Grant (General of the Union army), Abraham and his wife were watching a play, when Abraham was assasinated by John Wilkes Booth, A citizen of the confederate states of America.
